If I can keep one hope from fading
One faith from failing
One heart from breaking
If I can keep one tear from falling
I’ll not have lived in vain.
If I can piece one life together
Mend one crack
In just one soul
If I can be the arms that gather
I’ll not have lived in vain.
If I can ease one heart from sighing
Unveil the lying
Cry with the crying
If I can spare one lost from dying
I’ll not have lived in vain.
For I have warred for thirty years
Through violence
And bloody tears
Yet if my pain bears life, breaks fears,
It won’t have been in vain.
If I can keep one child safe
Protect one soul
Reveal God’s grace
If I can show one man Christ’s face
I’ll not have lived in vain.
